CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“Where were we?” said Matthew, smiling at the group huddled around him after Thanksgiving dinner. It was mild, with a cool breeze coming off the bayou. George, Sven, Hannu, and Magnus lit several fires, keeping the cold at bay for the time being, at least.

“Gaspar and Pierre were both off serving in the Army Rangers. When Pierre’s first young wife died so quickly, we thought we’d lost him forever. Instead, he made the decision to follow Gaspar’s footsteps and left as quickly as the Army would take him. I worried about them all the time, just like my Mama and Pops worried about me. I knew what it was like to have to kill in the name of your country. It wasn’t something I wished on my sons. Not ever. Yet I knew they were going to have to do it.

“It was Gaspar’s second tour, and we got word that he was missing in action. It was somewhere in South America. That’s all they would tell us. The younger children were all still in school. Marie was at university. Antoine and Luc were at boot camp. We made call after call to try to find out any news, and no one would tell me a thing. So, I decided to take matters into my own hands.”
